AUTHOR PROFILE
Sara Davidmann is a sculptor, artist and photographer. In 1999 she was entranced by a drag queen who visited her exhibition in fill slap and costume. Sara set out over two years to understand, enjoy and capture the images around her. She was a regular visitor to The WayOut Club and every other event in London held at this time. She won the confidence of trannies, crossdressers and drag queens with her friendly interest and winning smile. And it was these she was most excited by.
"In 2001 Sara asked if she could shoot a set of pictures at The WayOut Club's Alternative Miss London contest. As good as her word she gave me a well shot set of pictures capturing every contestant. Transsexual, Lady boy, Crossdresser all were caught in flattering fashionista, catwalk, style. Based on these images I assumed her interest seemed, like mine, to be all embracing and glamorous. So it was a shock when I first saw the 60 images she selected, from hundreds taken, to publish in this book. At first I thought she had picked out the grotesque and the shock images almost to parody us. But now I think that Sara actually captured the sincere truth, and I think this was because she was with us long enough to see through the makeup and enjoy it for exactly what it was, and is. Yes it is possible to make the camera lie. It is possible to make the camera flatter. But Sara Davidmann is first and foremost a woman, a woman interested in people, and what makes them tick. She is intrigued by us as real human beings who play with the gender duality, fun and artifice that is the essence of drag. She is an artist and she has found art within the truth of 1999 to 2003 on London's drag and crossdressing scene. And I for one like this book alot".
