Gender Party in Dresden, Germany - The 14th Party for Transgender in East Germany from 13.5.2005 to 15.5.2005. See their website for more details at http://www.genderparty.de.

Grayson Perry's TV Documentary - Hair Today, Gown Tomorrow - "You've probably glimpsed us on TV" said Grayson Perry, introducing his essay on transvestism. Why Men Wear Frocks? Glimpsed, mate? You're a fixture in the schedules, and I'm not just talking about Little Britain's Emily (winningly identified by Perry as one of the more accurate representations of the transvestite life). Only last May One Life devoted a whole programme to the travails of Charlotte (aka Jim) and Claire (aka Jim) complete with the obligatory sequences of nylon stockings being smoothed over knobbly, masculine knees. True, as far as I'm aware none of the major soaps has yet run a transvestism storyline (could this be what Eastenders is looking for?). True, too, that previous documentaries have not been presented by a man happy to alternate between motorbike leathers and a size 14 baby-doll dress. But even so, you couldn't help suspecting that you were going to see the same old sling-backs being taken for a totter round the block.
In fact Perry's film did deliver something new, in among the familiar stuff about the tranquillising effect of taffeta and the sideshow spectacle of a large crowd of panto dames attending a transvestite mini-break in Scarborough. For one thing, Perry was as winning presence - drily funny and unhysterical about what he described as a "compulsion". Where previous films about transvestism have tended to present the life as an inescapable plight, there was an air of Tranny Pride to Perry's approach. Transvestites, he argued, were simply men who were unwilling to restrict themselves to a historically accidental definition of masculinity. And in pursuit of that argument, he went to some interesting places. His passion for motorcycles, for example, allowed him to draw parallels between the masculine dressing up or bike racers (all that figure-hugging leather, all that colour) and the transvestite's love of frilly schmutter.
Some questions remained unanswered. Perry argued that it was getting harder for men to reveal their sensitive side, suggesting that the word of metrosexuality has yet to reach Essex. He never resolved either whether the costumes transvestites wear constitute a disguise within which they can move freely, or act as a billboard for their inner feelings. Is it a kind of hiding or a kind of speech? But there was something fine about the final sequence in which he walked through a London street market in skirt and lime green stockings, reprising a triumphant tracking shot from The Naked Civil Servant. Children and stallholders hooted and catcalled, and Perry smiled and sashayed as if they were all throwing flowers.

Vicky Lee & Lesley's Interview in the Guardian Weekend Magazine - Craig Taylor of The Guardian Weekend magazine contacted me (Vicky Lee) at WayOut to ask for an interesting transgender relationship to interview for his 'relationship spirit' column Jan 8th 2005 I am very wary of such enquiries knowing that some magazines can treat contributors very shabbily and can misrepresent transgender people (and other minorities) by printing selective quotes from a prejudiced agenda. However Craig and the Guardian come with a better pedigree than most and proved to be very nice to work with. During our interview Craig said "What a life you've had - I only have a short column - I could fill a good few pages". Craig when my new book is ready I will be back for another chat. Craig arranged for photographer Stephanie to visit us to get a picture for the column. It was soon obvious that our two dogs Peggy Lee (right) and Rosie Lee (left) were not going to be left out. Craig Taylor wrote WE LOVE EACH OTHER Vicky Lee & Lesley Lambert VICKY - I prefer to be called transgendered rather than transsexual. I'm an inbetweeny, but I'm an inbetweeny in most things in life. The view is better when you're on the fence. She has always been there with me, even when I was asking, 'Should I be some-one else?' One day she said, 'I don't care if you go further down the tranny route. You're the person I want to be with. "She has always been there with me, even when I was asking, 'Should I be some-one else?" LESLEY - We met at a Scout and Guides function when I was 16. He was 17 and we were quick to fall in love. I suppose we grew up together in a lot of ways. Chris, Vicky - for me it's all intermingled. It's the person I love. It's a very happy situation now. I can borrow jewellery and she's very good at DIY. Alternative Miss World event on 22 October 2004. Venue Cirque at the Hippodrome Address Leicester Square, London, Greater London WC2H 7JH, England Tel +44 (0) 20 7437 4311 Cost £25 -
Get ready for tears, tantrums and running mascara, the Alternative Miss World is back at The Hippodrome, Leicester Square. This outrageous event brings together a dazzling array of artistes, drag queens, performers, freaks and fops from every corner of the world, neither male nor female, but superhuman.

Gender, nationality and traditional concepts of beauty are utterly irrelevant. Instead the Alternative Miss World is a celebration of everything wild, wacky and spectacularly creative, modelled more on Crufts than the world famous beauty pageant. However, they do share the same competition categories: daywear, swimwear and evening wear, with a catwalk promenade and personality

Fifteen entrants take part in outlandishly over-the-top outfits and competition is fierce. Previous winners include Derek Jarman and Bruce Lacey. The winner of the last event in 1998 was an 84 year-old Russian. Each event is themed and previous examples are fire, water and circus. This year's theme is Universe.

Miss Alternative World is the brainchild of Andrew Logan, a sculptor and jeweller to royalty. He launched the event in 1972 and has gone on to host 11 events at intermittent intervals. The pageant itself is like a surrealist art event. Brian Eno (who is a judge and has also composed a theme tune to the event), has said it ought to win the Turner Prize.

Andrew Logan says "Life in modern Britain can be too awfully serious and this is my attempt to provide a forum for people to express themselves outrageously, indulge in self adornment and have a spectacularly good time." He has designed an ornate crown and a throne bedecked with jewels on which the winner will be seated during the final procession.

First held in 1972 in a converted jigsaw puzzle factory in Islington, London. There have been ten Alternative Miss World Contests. Andrew Logan, in association with Kash Point, invites you to the 11th Alternative Miss World. "UNIVERSE" Doors open 8PM - Show from 9PM

Later at KASH POINT the world's coolest club 12-3.30AM. Guest DJ EROL ALKAN Co-compered by ANDREW LOGAN and comedian JULIAN CLARY. Ooriginal theme anthem by BRIAN ENO with music mashed up and manipulated by RICHARD TORRY * MATTHEW GLAMORRE * ANDY McDONALD. lighting by NICK GREY Live CURSOR MINOR * BISHI * THE UNIVERSETTES and surprise guest stars Judges include: * Libertines' PETE DOHERTY * Pop Artist PETER BLAKE * Turner Prize Winner GREYSON PERRY * Guru BRIAN ENO * * Design Legend ZANDRA RHODES * Bad Girl's AMANDA BARRIE * * Britain's Best BOY GEORGE * Hollywood Actress SIAN PHILIPS * and others to be confirmed.

The colours will be the midnight blue of the universe with explosions of rainbows. Tickets £25 INNER SPACE - V.I.P. tickets £75 OUTER SPACE Available in advance from: www.londontheatrebookings.com or telephone +44 (0)20 7851 0300 Box offices: * Hippodrome, Leicester Square; * 31 Coventry Street; * 189 Shaftsbury Avenue; * 23 St Martins Court a modest booking charge applies

The contest is open to all. The 'Void' in 1998 was won by a 76 year old Russian lady. She was wonderful. Contestants arrive from all over the world and dress in the most wonderful sculptural designs. There will be three categories: Swim Wear, Day Wear and Evening wear. The successful Alternative Miss World 2002 "Universe" will be crowned on a specially designed throne with crown jewels designed and sculptured by myself.

"Whether sculpting in glass, bejewelling the rich and famous, or acting as exotic host to the globe's most outrageous fashion show, Logan's trademark is clear: a celebration of colour, invention and nerve. His Alternative Miss World extravaganzas have acquired legendary status. Celebrities such as David Hockney, Zandra Rhodes and Divine have acted as waiters at table or as inspired participants in a living art show; one year, David Bowie couldn't get in - destined to wait outside in his Rolls Royce. Logan's influence on rave culture at the end of the 20th century is clear - for example, Gerlinde von Regensburg, a participant in the early AMW's, was inspired to produce 'Kinky-Gerlinky' and in the late 90s, at the Ministry of Sound, dancers in cages echoed the 1978 AMW."

Press For Change - Many thanks for those who have made donations to keep PFC running. Since Christine's first 'passing the plate' email, 52 people have made donations and 7 people have returned standing order forms. £1650 has been raised. This is excellent news and certainly helps. The message below came from a couple who have personally done a lot for the 'cause', and who have regularly donated to PFC's running costs. They took one of the major cases through to Europe. At the end of the message, if you feel inspired, there are instructions on how to make a donation.
From: LB - I've been thinking about the email Stephen circulated last week, following Christine's the week before about the PFC budget deficit. When I first read it, I felt angry, but put it to one side. Reading it again today, I'm still angry and feel compelled to say why. Stephen was delighted to announce donations of £1190 from 37 people, and standing orders from 4 more. I on the other hand think this is a pathetic response and here's why - specifically addressed to the other 1367 people on the mailing list who haven't yet replied to the appeal. The amount so far donated is thoroughly insulting to the small group of people who have worked all hours to the detriment of their own personal and family lives to bring about the legislation that is now in place. They have given thousands of hours over many years for NO PAYMENT AT ALL
There is virtually no-one who can't make a standing order of, say £2 a month, (the banks will let you set one up for any amount) and many could afford £5. This is all it would take to say thank you in a meaningful way to the PFC vice-presidents and other activists for their expertise, personal sacrifices, and their achievments on behalf of the whole community of transsexual people, and our partners and families. There's still a lot of work to be done - implementation of the act, related secondary legislation, the ID card proposals, privacy and protection issues...the list is endless. So take some responsibility! Think about how YOU can get behind them. Can you afford not to?
For Details on how to help either contact letters@pfc.org.uk or http://www.pfc.org.uk/campaign/donation.htm#bankdetails

Growing up is hard enough! Cicada Films is an award winning London based documentary film company. We are currently researching for a television series about 'gender'. The programmes will all be observational documentaries with the contributors telling their own stories. At the moment we are looking for young people and their families or carers to talk to. How much help and support did you have? Did you know where to look for help? Did you have access to medical help? What would you like to say to help others in your situation? When did you first realise that you had a gender identity disorder? We want to make a very positive series, as informative and inspirational as possible. In the UK gender issues are rarely openly discussed, yet it is the first label that we ever possess, one which often defines the course of our lives. Having talked extensively with people who know a lot more than I do we want your community to tell their own stories which will hopefully in turn help and inform others. If you feel that you would like to talk to me please call Claire on 020 7266 4646 E-mail: claire@cicadafilms.com. All contact will be held in the strictest confidence. Please also take a look at our web-site to see the type of films that we make. www.cicadafilms.com Cicada Films 1 Marylands Road Maida Vale London W9 2DU updated 14.8.04

House of Lords Ruling on Rights to Privacy Case A ruling was made by the House of Lords on 22 July 2004 which has implications for the Trans Community as well as society as a whole. It relates to the ability of the police under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), to collect and retain indefinitely, blood samples and fingerprints of anyone charged with a crime regardless of whether they are later acquitted. Liberty had earlier advised the Court of Appeal that the DNA in blood samples could reveal, "... more personal and detained information about an individual. This may include ...... information about a latent genetic illness, or the birth gender of a transsexual person. " The Court of Appeals' decision to uphold the PACE rules has been ratified by the House of Lords, refusing to accept that this breaches Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, namely the right to privacy. An appeal to the European Court of Human Rights may be considered. A report on this ruling can be found at on Out-Law.com or the full ruling can be found on the House of Lords site. The Gender Recognition Act 2004 The Gender Recognition Bill received Royal Assent on 01 July 2004. It is now known as the Gender Recognition Act 2004. There will now be a period in which the Department for Constitutional Affairs(DCA) sets up the necessary administrative systems. So for the time being trans people are unable to make applications for a Gender Recognition Certificate(GRC). The DCA suggests that this implementation process will take until the end of 2004 at the earliest and the first applications will be processed in early 2005. Members of the Gender Trust and any other trans person who is looking to take advantage of this legislation are advised to keep an eye on the gender trust website or that of the DCA Transsexual People pages http://www.dca.gov.uk/constitution/transsex/index.htm for up to date information as it becomes available. GT members and subscibers on our Elist will automatically receive this information. If you would like to subscribe to this email list, please email gteditor@gendertrust.org.uk. The DCA site contains very useful FAQ's on the Bill and it's likely implementation. There is no indication yet as to the cost of obtaining a GRC. For those wishing to read the Act, this can be found on Her Majesty's Stationery Office website http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2004/20040007.htm, or can be ordered online (Price £6.00) from the TSO Online Bookshop https://www.tso.co.uk/bookshop/bookstore. VIVA CLIMAX - As I’m sure you know Viva Climax was established in 2003 by Sheffield Union to provide the LGB community with an all day party, in a safe outdoor venue (Sheffield Union’s Gardens & bars) and also with a special Climax club night in the evening. Sheffield currently has no Gay Pride festival, but Viva Climax doesn’t try to fill this gap; it just seeks to provide a fun place for people to hang out and party in the sunshine! In the daytime, from 2pm

This year we will have cocktails in the sun, free orgasmic massages and temporary henna tattoos in the gardens. Plus there will be tons of giant games such as Snakes and Ladders, Twister, Connect 4, Crazy Golf, Jenga and Giant Operation! We have also invited Luke Unabomber over from Homoelectric and Electric Chair in Manchester, to play a very special summer set in the gardens between 6 and 8pm. To top things off there’ll be a BBQ serving delicious food all afternoon and loads of drinks offers.
PLUS! Keep a look out for THE GAY GUIDE crew to enter a top competition with loads of fab prizes to be won! In the evening, between 8 and 11pm
There will be live Salsa in the Interval Bar once again, FREE! At night, Climax 9pm – 2am
The region’s biggest LGB night gets underway on a Saturday at 9pm for a change! Join Marco from Channel 4’s Big Brother as he hosts karaoke in the Fusion from 9pm! Plus free champagne cocktails for the first 500 through the doors!
PLUS! Entry to the afternoon and evening events is FREE and the club night tickets are just £5! You cannot do better than that!
Why not get involved this year and organise a coach trip?
Discounts will be available on club night tickets for those organising trips of 30 people or more to make it worth your while.
Ring Dave on 0114 222 8569, or email viva.climax@sheffield.ac.uk for more info on group discounts, or if you just want to help out and be involved! Come on, let’s make this the biggest LGB party in the region!

PRIDE - OVER 30,000 ATTEND PRIDE PARADE, AND 15,000 FILL TRAFALGAR SQUARE RALLY Thanks to everyone who made Pride this year so successful. More vehicles, more floats and more dance bands in the parade than ever before....and a very impressive line-up of speakers and entertainment on the stage in Trafalgar Square. Mayor Ken Livingstone says he is delighted with the event, and is now set to help Pride London expand next year to include a wider variety of LGBT cultural events in a longer summer gay festival.

PRIDE LONDON BECOMES REGISTERED CHARITY Having set up as a not-for-profit company, Pride London has now become a registered charity - number 1104774. This will help with our fundraising, and with a full year to plan, we have time to make next year's pride even better on Saturday 2 July 2005. We particularly want to encourage more floats and groups to join the parade and will be meeting with community organisations to see how we can help create even more exciting floats and costumes.

PHOTO COMPETITION Did you take any good pictures of the Pride Parade and Rally? We'd like to publish the best ones on our web site, and use them in our publicity for next year's Pride. Closing date 30 August. You could win a bottle of Champagne by submitting your best pictures to: PridePhotos@gaytoz.com ..

AND NOW FOR NEXT YEAR We are planning to issue a monthly email newsletter to help keep you informed about plans for the Pride festival next summer. And we need your ideas, feedback and suggestions to build on our success this year. Let us know how you'd like to be involved on 2 July 2005 by contacting mailto:info@pridelondon.org Cheers Jason Info@pridelondon.org

MAYOR OF LONDON TO LEAD PRIDE PARADE - It was confirmed today that Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London will lead the Pride Parade from Hyde Park on Saturday July 3rd. The Parade, which starts at 12 noon will assemble at the Hyde Park football pitches adjacent to South Carriage Drive. Floats will assemble on the northbound carriageway of Park Lane. At noon the Mayor will lead the parade through Queen Mothers Gates where those on foot will be interspersed with motorised floats. The Pride Parade will continue along Piccadilly before turning right at Piccadilly Circus towards Trafalgar Square. As the procession continues along Whitehall it will pass Downing Street and on towards The Houses of Parliament. Dispersal will be at Victoria Embankment by Temple tube. The parade will be followed by the Pride Rally from 3pm to 5pm. This will comprise speakers from all political parties and from LGBT campaigning groups. Once again Ken Livingstone has agreed to participate and will be a keynote speaker. The speaker line up will be announced shortly. The stage in Trafalgar Square will be produced and hosted by popular LGBT personality, Jean T. Mayor Ken Livingstone said today 'I am proud of the contribution London has made to lesbian and gay equality by becoming the first city in the country to set up a civil partnerships register. What followed, with other cities setting up their own registers, and now government legislation on civil partnerships, showed that if you don't bend to bigotry it really is possible to change things for the better. I will be honoured to join tens of thousands of lesbian and gay Londoners on what I know will be a joyful Pride Parade this year.' 'We are delighted that Mayor Livingstone has agreed to lead the parade and to speak at the Pride Rally,' said Pride Chair Jason Pollock. 'It's the first time such a senior figure has agreed to lead the London Pride event'.

The Gender Recognition Bill updated 14.6.04
Here's the news we've all been waiting for
It has now passed ALL its parliamentary stages, and awaits Royal Assent. No more debates, no more amendments: parliament's role in the bill is now over. This afternoon, the House of Lords debated the Commons amendments to the bill, and passed them all. I am told that Lord Tebbit managed a few predictably outraged comments en route, but that was about it for difficulties. You will be able to read the full text of the debate on Hansard tomorrow, at http://www.parliament.uk Royal Assent will usually follow within days, though it can sometimes take a few weeks ... but it will almost certainly be before the end of June. When that's done, we will be able to talk of the Gender Recognition Act 2004. Many people have suggested that we should all have a huge big party to celebrate the bill's passage, but I always thought along the way that it would be tempting fate to make any plans before everything was final. So now it's time to say yes, let's all have a big party -- we'll circulate some ideas soon. We also have a huge amount of work to do assisting the DCA in implemeting the Bill. More on that in the months ahead, but for now please remember that you CAN NOT apply yet. See http://www.pfc.org.uk/pfclists/news-arc/2004q2/msg00072.htm for more info Well done everybody!

DRUG RESEARCH WITH THE TG COMMUNITY - Opinion Leader Research has been commissioned to conduct research on behalf of the Home Office to understand the drug information needs of the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender population. We are very keen to include transgender people in our research to obtain their views on drug use and drug information generally. To this end, we are inviting people from the transgender community to take part in this study, which is serving as a explorative study to understand the community and the issues better.
This piece of research presents an opportunity for the transgender community to express their opinions to the Government on the area of drug use. We would like to talk to people who self define themselves as transgender. It will be an opened, relaxed discussion, where there are no right or wrong answer. Moreover, strict confidentiality is assured - no names will be passed on to anyone.
Because of our limited resources, in total we would like to speak to upto 8 individuals (either alone or in small friendship groups). Below are the details of the research we are seeking to carry out:
WHO: People who self define themselves as transgender AND who use drugs other than Cannabis over past 6 months. We are willing to interview individuals, as well as a small group of friends (up to 3).
WHY: To understand their drug information needs.
HOW: Face to face interviews in a place of their convenience, with up to 3 individuals per session. Where appropriate telephone interviews can be used.
WHERE: Ideally all around the country. We will be in Brighton, Blackpool and London over the next few weeks, so if anyone lives in those areas a face to face interview would be best. For those who do not live around these areas, and wish to take part in this research, we are willing to call them at a appropriate time to carry out the interview.
LENGTH: Up to 1 hour session at a venue of your choice
REMUNERATION: £25 per individual We would be very happy to hear from you, so if you are interested in this piece of research please call Jonathan Reynaga on 020 7861 3080 with any questions, further details or to sign up. Many thanks, and I sincerely hope you are able to take part.
